What cameras and lenses are good for sports photos & video?
For outdoor sports, you'll actually benefit from using smaller-sensor cameras. Smaller sensors will make telephoto shots look closer, even on a smaller lens (because of crop factor). For indoor sports, you won't be able to get away with small sensors because of low-light situations (it's going to get expensive because you'll need full-frame cameras and big, low-light lenses).
Use Smaller-Sensors for Outdoor Sports
When it comes to outdoor sports photography, we think smaller-sensor cameras are better because:
Telephoto Capability: Smaller sensors enhance the effective focal length of lenses due to the crop factor, making telephoto shots appear closer.
Portability: Smaller cameras and lenses are generally lighter and easier to handle, which is beneficial for capturing fast-paced action.
Cost-Effectiveness: Smaller sensors typically come with a lower price point, allowing for more budget-friendly equipment options.
Use Full-Frame Sensors Indoors
In contrast, using larger sensor cameras is best for indoor sports for the following reasons:
Low-Light Performance: Indoor sports often occur in poorly lit environments, where smaller sensors struggle to perform.
Need for Full-Frame Cameras: To achieve better low-light performance indoors, you may need to invest in full-frame cameras.
Expensive Lenses: High-quality, low-light lenses are often required for indoor sports, which can increase overall costs significantly (and they're a lot more difficult to carry around).
